Visiting Physicians Research Program (APM 430)
The Division of Cardiac Surgery & Lung Transplantation is pleased to offer the Visiting Physician Research Program. This program is designed for international scholars who are currently on sabbatical from their academic appointments at their home institutions and are interested in engaging in a short-term research or academic project with a faculty sponsor from the Division of Cardiac Surgery & Lung Transplantation. Visiting Physicians Observership Program
The Division of Cardiac Surgery & Lung Transplantation is pleased to offer the Visiting Physician Observership Program, which allows international or local physicians to observe surgical procedures at UCSF Health/Medical Center. This program is designed for observational purposes only, and observers will not be permitted to offer any form of patient care or advice during their visit. Please contact our faculty directly to express your interest.
- Application lead time: 4-6 months
- Visa sponsorship: None; visitors will obtain B1 on their own.
- Duration: 1-3 days
- Terminal degree: Medical Degree
- Observership Application

Student Volunteer Program (Application is closed for 2025)
The Division of Cardiac Surgery & Lung Transplantation is dedicated to offering high school and college students a chance to acquire fundamental laboratory experience. In this program, students will learn various molecular biology techniques and explore the field of molecular therapeutics for lung cancer. Please note that this opportunity is solely for laboratory work and does not involve any patient care or observation.

- Student Category: Local High School Students/ College Students
- Duration: Usually 1-2 months during summer; maximum duration is no more than 12 months

UC Students Affiliate Program
UC student affiliate program is intended for enrolled/registered UC students (not UC extension) who are seeking short term experience in research or other academic project under the supervision of an academic appointee or principal investigator. Students will not be allowed to particicpate in any clinical observations. The time spent at UCSF during the school year should not exceed 49% time.
- Application lead time: 3-4 months
- Student Category: Undergraduate or Graduate Students enrolled in the University of California System.
- Duration: 1 semester (may be extended up to 1 year)
